Our HistoryFilling in Gaps, FIGS, was established in 1982 by a group of Wake County residents, healthcare professionals, and churches to address a serious social problem: the need for prescription medicines for low-income people.
The group was led by the Reverend Lex Mathews who was the Director of Christian Social Ministries for the Episcopal Diocese of NC from 1975 to 1985. Reverend Mathews and Ward Purrington met with the NC Department of Social Services to identify the greatest unmet social need in Raleigh: affordable prescription medicine. They were successful in launching FIGS with the support of founding church, Christ Church of Raleigh, with a grant from the Episcopal Diocese. The organization continues to grow with the help of professional organizations, community leadership, and church support. $2.8 million of prescription medicine has been purchased for more than 200,000 Wake County residents since 1982.
